GSHP-1 · Ground-source heat pumps

Geothermal heat pump installation and service

Geothermal heat pumps move heat to and from the ground through a water loop instead of the outdoor air. They're very efficient in Texas heat, but they need a contractor who understands the loop side as well as the refrigerant side.

What's included

  • New geothermal heat pumpsWater-to-air heat pumps, sized and set, with loop connections, pumps and controls.
  • Replacement of older geothermal unitsSwapping aging heat pumps while keeping the existing ground loop in service.
  • Loop-side troubleshootingFlow, pressure and temperature checks to find whether a problem is in the unit, the pumps or the loop.
  • Service and maintenanceCoil and filter care, water-side checks and refrigerant-side diagnostics to keep efficiency up.

Common questions: Geothermal Heat Pumps

Do you drill the geothermal loop?

Loop drilling is done by specialist drilling contractors. We install the heat pumps and the connections, pumps and controls, and we coordinate with the driller so both sides work together.

My building already has a ground loop. Can you replace just the heat pumps?

Yes. A well-built ground loop usually outlasts several generations of heat pumps. We check the loop's flow and condition, then replace the units.

Is geothermal worth it in Austin?

It costs more up front than air-source equipment, but it uses less energy because the ground stays cooler than summer air. It usually pays off best on buildings with long hours and owners who plan to keep the property.
